Information about Gulfstream V

The first reports of Gulfstream V (GV) appeared in October 1991, and in September 1992 an official presentation took place. The first flight of the prototype was performed on November 28, 1995, the American civil certificate was obtained in April 1997. The key decision for the development program was the selection in September 1992 of the BMW Rolls-Royce TRDD (now Rolls-Royce) BR710. Financial risks with the company “Gulfstream” in June 1993 divided the “Vought” (now “Northrop Grumman”) and the Japanese “Shin Maywa”, responsible for the manufacture of the wing. In September 1993, an agreement was reached on the development and production of tail and cabin floor with the Dutch firm “Fokker”.

Gulfstream V is a development of the Gulfstream IV with the fuselage of a new design, extended by 2.13 m, which allowed to accommodate 15-19 passengers in the cabin. The wing in the plan almost retained the shape of the predecessor, but its dimensions increased, as a result, the capacity of the wing tanks increased by 10%. The tail area is also increased. The cockpit bulkhead shifted to the rear of 0.30 m, from which it became more spacious.

The instrumentation was made like a GIV-SP based on a Honeywell SPZ-8500 system using six multi-function displays, a digital automated flight control system, and Honeywell / Marconi HUD. Satellite communication allowed to implement the concept of “office in the sky.”

The first flight of the aircraft took place on November 28, 1995. On December 16, 1996 the FAA certificate was obtained after the end of 1100 hours of test flights. This and four more aircraft took part in the certification program of the new machine (more than 900 flights were performed with a total duration of 1900 flight hours), after which on April 11, 1997 the FAA certificate was obtained. The aircraft was delivered to the first customer on July 1, 1997, and in the same summer, the company’s demonstration aircraft made a unique world tour on the Los Angeles-London-Hong Kong-Beijing-Tokyo-New York route, covering a distance of 35,692 km in 39 hours and 42 minutes.

The first aircraft was served July 1, 1997. By the end of 1998, contracts were concluded for the production of more than 100 aircraft of this model. The cost of the aircraft in the standard version is 29.5 million dollars, and in the VIP-configuration – 35 million.
