Creating a replacement for the Challenger 300 is not an easy task. Debuting in 2003, this model immediately became a favorite in its class, taking this title from Gulfstream II due to its generous thrust-to-weight ratio, large wing and agility. The Challenger 300 was not only more modern, but also more accessible, and in terms of other parameters it was not inferior to a competitor: a transcontinental range, a flat floor, an eight-passenger cabin, access to the luggage compartment in flight and “reinforced concrete” reliability. He would also have branded oval portholes and a charged price tag – and everyone would have decided that he was from Savannah. Georgia, not from Montreal.


Sales immediately began to hit records, because at that time the competition was very conditional. So, the closest competitor in the size of the cabin – Gulfstream G200 inferior in flight performance. Hawker 4000 could become a potential competitor in LTH, but because of a decade of “childhood diseases”, it actually fizzled out. As for the Dassault Falcon 50EX, the Canadian bypassed it in terms of operating costs.
In general, for almost a decade, the Challenger 300 held the first place in the midsize and super-midsize classes, since no other aircraft could offer such a combination of cabin comfort, heat and power, economy of operation and reliability. Customers voted wallet: until mid-2014, Bombardier sold and delivered more than 450 Challenger 300 aircraft.

However, during this time, the market has changed dramatically, and now in the super-midsize segment rather closely. There were significantly more high-tech models, such as the Embraer Legacy 500, the Gulfstream G280, as well as the surviving capital upgrade Cessna Citation Sovereign + and Citation X.

Due to such a serious competition, the Challenger 300 could no longer count on unconditional leadership. Having soberly assessed the situation, the leaders of Bombardier came to the conclusion that they should not launch a full-fledged replacement program for the Challenger 300. Instead, they decided to implement the solutions that the operators requested. Engineers turned the Challenger 300 into a new model, with modernized avionics, more powerful engines, more efficient winglets and nice new items in the cabin equipment. The maximum take-off weight increased by 794 kg, the other weight parameters were also close to the wishes of customers.

The result is the Challenger 350, which surpasses the original in almost everything, but differs in price by only 1.68 million dollars. The first flight of the aircraft took place on March 2, 2013.

The starting customer for the new model was NetJets’s equity operator, who placed an order for 75 aircraft in the exclusive Signature Series for $ 7.3 billion. It’s not surprising that NetJets’s requirements had a lot of impact on the aircraft’s characteristics and cabin equipment. In this form, the Challenger 350 turned out to be attractive for other large operators: orders for 20 cars each placed VistaJet and Flexjet.
The main areas of modernization, in addition to increasing take-off weight, are engine replacement, the upgrading of Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Advanced avionics, and the renewal of the passenger compartment interior.

The artificial vision system will provide them with a complete picture of the overboard landscape in 3D mode; Dual inertial coordinate system will allow the aircraft to automatically determine its location, speed and orientation in space; A unique, automatically updated database, collections of electronic maps and technical documentation will provide the ability to fully paperless flights. All of this, in the aggregate, according to the developers, should reduce the workload of the pilots and help increase their awareness of the situation.

One of the most obvious modifications that distinguish the Challenger 350 from its predecessor is the winglets. Located at a greater angle to the plane of the wing than the Challenger 300, they more effectively cope with the resistance and, moreover, extend the wing by 158 cm. Thanks to them, the plane gains height faster despite the increased weight.

The rest of the design and mechanization of the wing are preserved in its previous form. The same applies to the fuselage, with the exception of windows that are 5 cm longer and now transmit 12% more light. It would seem, not so much – but noticeable to the naked eye!

In the standard configuration, the cabin is designed for eight passengers in two club sections or nine, if one of them agrees to fly in the toilet in a specially equipped chair. However, as an option, you can put in place of two seats in the back of the cabin triple sofa. Folding tables measuring 60 x 63 cm share a pair of chairs.


The length of the cabin floor is 503 cm. As already mentioned, thanks to the enlarged windows, the cabin is noticeably brighter than in the previous version, which visually makes it more spacious. Lufthansa Technik’s cabin control system (CMS) includes a 22-inch entertainment center with two 22-inch monitors with a moving 3D flight map, eight active noise canceling headsets, speakers, a Blu-ray player, HDMI, ports for USB and iPhone / iPad. The standard cabin equipment also includes four sockets, CMS touch screens for each seat. To turn on the light above the chairs and tables, change the volume and call the flight attendant, there are also separate buttons. Satellite telephony: Iridium – standard, Inmarsat SwiftBroadband – option.
Passengers enter the cabin by a gangway equipped with a one-way railing and stage lighting. The door is equipped with an electric motor, which facilitates its closing, and a screen that reduces noise. On the right side there is a kitchen unit, in front of it is a wardrobe.

Standard on-board kitchen equipment includes a coffee maker (on NetJets aircraft, it is replaced by a machine for preparing a portion of hot drinks), a microwave, ice and waste containers, a compartment and containers for storing food and beverages. The kitchen unit will delight the conductors with a full-sized working surface and a resistant to impact finish. A sink with running water is available as an option.
In the rear fuselage is a toilet room. The dry closet is serviced outside. In addition to the sink and the usual cabinets, mirrors, etc., there is also the entrance to the luggage compartment with a volume of 3 m3. This compartment can also be accessed outside the aircraft through a hatch located under the pylon of the left engine.

Optional insulation reduces noise by 23 dB, but weighs an additional 90 kg.
The aircraft received new power units which are two Honeywell HTF7350 turbojet two-circuit engines capable of developing eight cruise speeds of about 8 Mach at 3200 Nm of torque with eight passengers on board and providing a maximum distance of 5926 km, which is 250 km more than at Bombardier Challenger 300. At the same time, engine thrust increased compared to its predecessor aircraft engines by 7.3%.
