Information about Boeing 747
Boeing 747 is the first wide-body aircraft in the history of aviation, and one of the most recognizable airliners in the world. He even got an informal nickname – “Jumbo Jet” (Jumbo jet). During 37 years Boeing 747 owned the record for maximum passenger capacity, and today it is the longest passenger airplane on the planet. Its history began in 1969, and since then, Boeing has been constantly improving the design of the family of this liner.
Specifically for the Boeing 747 company Pratt & Whitney developed a huge turbofan engine with a high degree of double-circuit-JT9D. In order to increase the level of safety and flight qualities of the aircraft for 747, 4 redundant hydraulic systems and slotted flaps were installed, which allowed the aircraft to be used on runways of relatively short length.
On September 30, 1968, Boeing 747 was pumped out of the hangar to represent the public, and on February 9, 1969, he made his first test flight.
Boeing has invested a huge sum of money in the development of this aircraft. A few months before the delivery of the first 747-100, the company was forced to contact the bankers for additional funding to complete the project. During this period, Boeing’s debt to investors amounted to about 2 billion. Dollars. Later, the president of Boeing, William Allen, explained: “It was too large a project for us”.
But despite all this, Boeing 747 was waiting for a major success. In the segment of wide-body aircraft, the liner has kept the monopoly for many years. And of course he paid off.
The first flight.
The first flight of the Boeing 747-100 aircraft was held on January 22, 1970.
Since its entry into the airline in 1970, Boeing 747 has continued to modernize. Almost immediately behind the basic model 747-100 there were modifications to the light: 747-100B (model with increased takeoff weight), as well as 747-100SR (model with an increased number of passenger seats, but shortened range of flight).
In 1971, Boeing released a modification of 747-200, which from the base model differed with more powerful and reliable engines, as well as increased takeoff weight. The aircraft was offered in both passenger and cargo versions. The modification of the 747-200SR appeared in 1976.
In 1980, the Model 747-300 was released. The upper deck of the aircraft became longer, respectively, and the passenger capacity increased. The aircraft were supplied with more modern engines, so that the speed and takeoff weight of the liner also became larger.
But the design of the liner was subjected to serious changes with the release of modification 747-400. First of all, the cabin has changed: The aircraft were installed computers, calculating the various parameters of the flight, which are displayed on the displays (Glass Cockpit). Thus, the control of the aircraft was optimized, and the crew was reduced from 3 to 2 people.
As for the fuselage, composite materials were applied in its construction, which allowed to reduce the weight of the aircraft. The wingspan in comparison with 747-300 was increased by 4.8 meters. The liner has received modern powerful and reliable engines. The takeoff weight and range of the flight, in comparison with the previous modifications, were considerably increased.
Interior of the salon was redesigned to provide the passenger as much as possible personal space. And in general the plane became, quieter, more powerful and faster than all previous modifications of the Boeing 747.
In 1996, Boeing demonstrated the designs of versions 747-500X and 747-600X. However, the development of these versions could cost about 5 billion. dollars, so there was no great interest in them. In the end, many of the proposed ideas for the 747X family were embodied in the modification of the 747-400ER (the version with the increased range of flight), the commercial operation of which began in 2002.
The last aircraft modification 747-400 was released in 2009.
