This aircraft is designed for short and medium flights. The basis for the production became Boeing 737-300. Boeing 737-400 is longer than Boeing 737-300 at 4 m. Due to this change there was a need to change the air conditioning system inside the aircraft. In addition, the Boeing 737-400 has two missed windows on each of its sides of the fuselage. Therefore, the Boeing 737-400 can be visually distinguished from its counterparts in the series 737 Classic. Also Boeing 737-400 has two additional emergency exits on the wing of the aircraft.

Boeing 737-300 is equipped with two engines CFM International. Also some Boeing 737-400 were equipped with reinforced engines CFM International. The Boeing 737-400 weighs heavier than the Boeing 737-300 and for this purpose the creators designed a reinforced chassis for the aircraft. Boeing 737-300 and Boeing 737-400 have similar avionics. The Boeing 737-400 accommodates 146 passengers. With a dense lineup of seats the plane can take on board 189 passengers. Boeing 737-400 is able to fly 3850 km. The first flight of Boeing 737-400 was made in 1988. In 2000, the production of Boeing 737-400 was halted. At that time more than 500 units were produced.

Many airline companies still continue to use the Boeing 737-400.
