Information about Airbus A320

In the early 1970s, the European firms BAC (Great Britain), MBB (Germany), SAAB (Sweden) and CASA (Spain) formed the Eurolein working group for research of the narrow-body aircraft family with a number of seats from 60 to 200, which were to be operated with short runways and low noise levels. The most appropriate aircraft was recognized in the class of 130-180 seats with two CFM CFM International CFM56. The project of the aircraft was called JET (Joint European Transport). The Airbus Industry consortium, which focused on wide-body aircraft programs, launched its own narrow-body aircraft in early 1980 under the symbols SA1, SA2 and SA3 (SA-sirigleaisle, i.e. “narrow-body”) with two CFM CFM56. By this time, the work on the JET project was finally completed, and the projects of the SA family remained in Europe only in their class. From the SA family, options SA1 (130-140 seats) and somewhat longer SA2 (150-160 seats) were selected.

In February 1981, the first version was given the designation A320-100, and the second – A320-200. In the future, the passenger capacity of both projects became equal to 150, and they became different only by the flight range and the paid load.

Officially, the A320 aircraft program began in March 1984. The first flight of an experienced A320 aircraft with CFM56-5A1 engines was made on February 22, 1987. At the end of February 1988 the aircraft was certified in Europe and in December in the USA. In March 1988, Air France received the first aircraft. The A320 is the first passenger plane in the world with an electric remote control system (EDSU), a crew cabin equipped with side control knobs instead of the usual steering columns, and horizontal tail assembly made entirely of composite materials. The A320 served as the basis for the development of the A319 and A321.

The aircraft is equipped with the EFIS digital avionics complex manufactured by the French company TOMCOH-CSF, consisting of six multi-color color displays for displaying flight and navigation information, as well as data on the onboard systems and warnings about failures. All avionics comply with the ARINC 700 standard. It was mass-produced in 1988-1989. A total of 21 aircraft were delivered.
