Information about Airbus A318 

The Airbus consortium launched the Airbus A318 program in April 1994. It is designed to service routes on which the frequency of departures is quite high, and the passenger traffic is small.

The liner is designed to carry 107 passengers in a typical layout of two classes. By the way, it expands the family of fairly well-known narrow-body Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft to 124.150 and 185 passengers, respectively.

It is planned to release several modifications. From the base version with a maximum take-off weight of 59 tons and a range of 2,800 km to an aircraft weighing 68 tons and a range of 6,000 km.

Compared with the “319th”, the A318 fuselage is shortened by 2.39 m, the seats are wider, the spacious comfortable lounge. In addition to the shortened fuselage, in order to provide higher road stability, a keel is installed on the “318th”, its height is 75 cm more than on other narrow-body Airbus airplanes.
For the first time in the practice of producing aircraft of the consortium, it is not riveting, but laser beam welding that is used to attach stringers to the fuselage skin. By the way, for the development and implementation of this new progressive technological process, “Erbas” was awarded in 1999 the German Industry Award for achievements in the field of science and technology. The use of laser beam welding allows you to speed up production, reduce weight and increase the corrosion resistance of the structure.
The crew cabin is typical, as is the case with all the 320’s. The wing is the newest and optimum design for an aircraft of this class. As a result, flight performance is improved, and fuel consumption is reduced. This will reduce costs in terms of transportation of one passenger by 10%, compared with competitors.
On the “318th” installed engines – either PW6000, specially developed by “Pratt-Whitney” for aircraft of this type, or CF M56-5B firm “CFM International”, which are equipped with other models of the A320 family.
As for the first aircraft “318-x”, they are equipped with engines “Pratt-Whitney” PW-6000. By the way, in August the final assembly of the first A318 aircraft began at the Airbus plant in Hamburg.

Due to the unique community, all cars of the A320-X family can pilot pilots who have been trained in one of the types. And for airlines that operate Erbas cars, maintenance costs are reduced. Solid orders for the “318th” already coming. Today, their number has reached -136.

And what is the global market need for such machines? According to the Airbus forecast, in the next 20 years more than 1,900 aircraft of the “318th” will be required. After all, the airlines are replacing outdated “Boeing 737” and “Douglas DC-9”, which are mainly operated on the internal North American and European routes, where the frequency of shipments is high.
